A Cappella singing is best experienced from the inside

conductor rehearsing the choir 'in the pews' in Jesmond United reformed churchWe are a lively choir, led by an equally lively conductor, who being a Lay Clerk at Durham Cathedral sets high standards and then helps us to achieve them (aided by a post rehearsal drink-optional of course!)

Rehearsals for our Autumn 2017 programme will begin on Wednesday 13 September.

We will be preparing for our winter concert on 9 December of sixteenth century English music, including three works by John Taverner – Missa Gloria tibi Trinitas, Kyrie Le Roy and Dum transisset Sabbatum, also John Sheppard’s Libera nos, salva nos and Thomas Tallis’s Videte Miraculum.

As well as our main concert this term, we will also be contributing to sung services and carol services in Sunderland and Newcastle, including St Andrew’s Day in our host church on Newgate Street.

Planned events in 2018 include a concert in Jesmond, Evensong in Durham Cathedral and a maritime theme concert during the Sunderland Tall Ships race.

The choir has about 35 members and rehearses weekly on Wednesdays from 7 to 9 pm for about 30 weeks of the year (roughly equivalent to School/University terms) in St. Andrew’s Church, Newcastle. A warm relationship has been built between Cappella and St. Andrew’s, traditionally Newcastle’s oldest parish church, located on Newgate Street, close by the mediaeval town wall and burial place of composer Charles Avison.

We welcome enquiries from potential new members in all voice parts with previous choir and sight reading experience. Acceptance depends on maintaining a good choral balance and a short audition after attending a rehearsal.

The choir annual full subscription is currently £120, with concessions (pensioners £75, students/unwaged only £15).

We have a rehearsal attendance policy for each concert but would not expect you always to be available for every performance in the year.
